Who are the ultimate bank robbers in life and business? Indecision goes to the top of my list. I’m sure you’ve been in situations where you simply have no idea what direction to go, or what you should do. We all have.
Making decisions is just a part of life. But indecision can be one of the biggest bank robbers of all.
One of my favorite quotes that has always stuck with me over the years is by Andy Andrews, “Successful people make their decisions quickly, and change their minds slowly. Unsuccessful people make their decisions slowly and change their minds quickly.”
There’s a business idea – have a booth in town: “$20, and I’ll make a decision for you.” Like a kissing booth. Only worse.
“Should I marry her?”
“No.”
“Okay thanks so much.”
“Next!”
Just kidding.
But keep in mind that choosing to let someone else make decisions for you, is also a decision, in and of itself. Choose wisely. At the end of the day, you are still the responsible party.
Here’s One Way To Make Decisions Quickly
Generally speaking, if I don’t absolutely love something, the answer is no. This makes decisions quick and easy, and you don’t waste time on mediocrity, and end up saying to yourself, “Dang it! I knew this isn’t what I wanted from the start.”
I am super picky because normally have a crystal clear idea of what I want in my head, and I will not stop until I find it. I’d rather have nothing, than the thing I have envisioned in my head.
I feel like if I’m going to dive into something, I’ve got to do it 200%. But sometimes, that little bank robber named “In.D.ecision” (he’s also a gangster), creeps up. So I came up with this cool trick that works like magic.
Instead of doing nothing and sitting there being indecisive, tell yourself, “Okay, while I’m deciding, I’m going to choose the thing that I feel is MOST right, and then just chill out and start working on that.” 9 times out of 10, because you’ve made less “drama” out of it, your brain relaxes, and then almost like lightening, you know EXACTLY what you should or should not be doing. You’re tricking yourself into making a decision and taking action.
Next, remember the grass is always greener on the other side. If you’re thinking you’re going to “miss out” on something, than tell yourself, “fine, go do it.” And start taking action on it. All the sudden you might start thinking, “This is NOT the way to go.” Cool. Now you know because you took ACTION.
See, it’s easy to speculate how things could, would or should be, if you made decision A, B or C. However, many times we spend so much time just THINKING about which one we should do, we could have already tried out A in the same amount of time.
Then you KNOW that’s not the right way to go, instead of wondering. Like, “Am I going to like banana flavored ice cream?” Well, I don’t know. But we could think about it for a long time. Let’s see….. what do bananas normally taste like? Hmm, do I like bananas normally? Well, only with peanut butter. Well, is this going to be the same as bananas, or is it going to be nasty banana flavor – like that ring pop I had one time when I was 5 that was banana, but was super gross.”
Just take a bite. You’ll know in 1 second whether you like it or not.
So then when In.D.ecision comes along with his friend D.enial – you’ve got to have your A game on, and be aware.
I think it’s funny to look back on situations and decisions, and when things don’t go how you thought they would, you see that you really knew the answer from the start. You just chose not to listen to yourself. Many times, indecision is caused by not listening to yourself, or having the ability to be straight with yourself. D.enial
Like when you date someone, and in your first date you think, “Hmm, now that doesn’t sit right.” But you’re like, “Weee! Whatever. This is fun.” All of the sudden two years have passed, and you end up breaking up for the EXACT same thing you saw on day one. But now everyone’s mad, hurt and crying.
I’ve made some awesomely stupid decisions in my life, but I’ve also made a lot of very good ones. I suppose they wouldn’t be 100% stupid, because I did learn a lot. I have a tendency to go at things 180 mph. So when I crash, I get some pretty nice bruises. Thank the Lord I have a sense of humor. On the flip side, going at things 180 mph means when the decisions are good, the results are stellar.
Decisions like – “Hey Mr. Grocery Man, where are the bananas?” – or “Hey Mr. Taxi Cab Driver, how do I get to Fifth Avenue?” that’s just leveraging other peoples’ knowledge. Be careful though – being decisive or indecisive becomes a habit, very quickly.
“Hey Bob, what about this?”
“I like A”
“Okay then what about x, y, z, or q?”
“Ummm, q”
“Yeah, you know I really liked q too. That’s what Jane picked. She’s makes good decisions. Should I make her CEO?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
Obviously that’s a little dramatic, but you get the idea. It’s crazy how quickly decisions can snowball.
The answers to some of life’s toughest questions aren’t going to come from someone else. I do believe in doing your due diligence and constantly learning and devouring new information, but you have your intuition for a reason.
The scary part is, you don’t realize how important decisions can be at the time. You just thought it was a little decision, and that it was okay to rely on someone else. You don’t realize it was a monumental decision, until it’s run it’s course, and made an impact in your life, good or bad.
In Internet Marketing everyone talks about “not reinventing the wheel” etc… And I agree on some accounts. Like “Hey why don’t I try and reverse engineer all of Google’s algorithms this Saturday! You bring the popcorn I’ll bring the calculator!” I would say that’s not the most efficient use of your time. Unless that’s your thing.
Also understand that many times the only people telling you not to reinvent the wheel, are saying that only because they want you to buy their wheel, or because now you become a spoke in their wheel. Which is not always a bad thing. Hey, they invested their time and dollars into making the wheel, and you don’t have to rebuild it, so that’s more than fair. Leverage is amazing.
But why not make your own kind of wheel?
Don’t be afraid to listen to yourself, be decisive and TAKE ACTION on your own ideas. Everyone online is following everyone else around online. Do something different. You’ll stick out in a great way. But that’s a whole other topic. The point is to DECIDE and ACT.
Action is therapeutic. Do SOMETHING in the direction of your dreams.
That “something” can turn into “something amazing.”
Don’t let the gangsters get you down. Be decisive and follow through with fire.
